My first interview

(1)  Interview preparations:

I met Kevin in a class that I have with him and I asked him to make an interview for English class. Kevin is a business student in St Cloud State University, he is from Sothern china in a small town called Loudi, China. He has been her in the United States of America for two years. He accepted the invitation and we scheduled the meeting in Sunday afternoon in the library. I printed two copies of the questions that I will be asking him and meet him in the library. I gave him one copy of the questions and asked his permeation to record the interview.

 The interview went great I felt comfortable and the interviewee looked comfortable. The only thing that I didn’t do great is that I should have asked for more details in some of the questions

China is country in East Asia and one of the biggest countries in the world. China is the most populated country in the world with more than 1.35 billion. China is located in Eastern Asia, bordering the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and South China Sea, between North Korea and Vietnam. China is slightly smaller then the US in size and the climate is similar to the US’s. China Geography is mostly mountains and high plateaus, and deserts in the west. In the east it is mostly plains, deltas and hills. China has many natural resources they are; coal, iron ore, petroleum, natural gas, mercury, tin, tungsten, antimony, manganese, molybdenum, vanadium, magnetite, aluminum, lead, zinc, rare earth elements, uranium, hydropower potential (world's largest). The capital on China is Beijing. The government in China is communist but the people get to elect their president who can serve up to two five-year terms. China has many different festivals but the most important one is the Chinese New Year. This is the time when debts are settled and houses are cleaned. Time is spending with family and friends.

Faisal: How do you communicate with each other in your home country?

Kevin: We speck Chinese and when we communicate with each others we always use sell phones and use computers. And sometimes we go to a party and we eat together.

Faisal: What is the clothing style for men and women?

Kevin: For the clothing style do you mean traditional.

Faisal: Yes, the traditional.

Kevin: For the women we have qipao that’s for. And for the men we have tang suit.

Faisal: How do men and women dress now?

Kevin: dress like American people they wear suits very professional suit and young people wear fashion cloths. And women are more fashion and not many people wear traditional clothes.

Faisal: How are women and men treated differently?

Kevin: Women and men now are nowadays not a big difference anymore. I think the only difference maybe is in the politics, the women cannot be a very high position in the politics. The other things are the same, women can drive as the men, women can go to school as men, women has more rights. And maybe sometimes in some things have discrimination, because they regulate women having a baby. Because if you have baby you need to take care of the baby you don’t have time to do work and sometimes some companies need a man to do this kind of jobs, because the women not like a man in strength so that the women cannot do some very heavy work.  

Faisal: How has your experience here helped you interpret and respect cultural differences?

Kevin: Because I have experienced the culture shock. I heard that in Saudi Arabia they cannot eat pork. So I respect the cultural difference and I know that the women in Saudi Arabia need to wear scarf. So maybe if we are curious about scarf and we open it, is not allowed. It is really serious. When I first came to America I learned about those cultural things so I understand their culture and respect the cultural differences.  

Faisal: Do you enjoy speaking with other exchange students?

Kevin: Yes, I also speak with a lot of American people, But I more likely to speak with other exchange students. Because we all use other second language and we have more common living in The United States because we are Foreigners here. So I want to speak with them to know them and be friends with them.

Faisal: How long have you been in the United States?

Kevin: I have been here for two and a half years.

Faisal: Have you been able to visit any other parts of the United States?

Kevin: Yes. I went to a lot of places. I went to Miami, I went to Orlando, and I went to New York, I went to Chicago. 

Faisal: What are your home country’s major religions?

Kevin: My home country major religion is Buddhism Taoism.

Faisal: What influenced you to come to the United States? Especially, Saint Cloud State?

Kevin: I think why I came to here the thing, which really influenced me, is English. I came here to learn English. And get my English improve I knew American before I come here, I know that American as good as our imagination just they have bad things but they are still good. Maybe when I came here two and a half years ago they influenced my heart and my attitude. I think it makes me more mature than I was in China because I need to do any thing by my self and get help when I want to and may be no body can help you your self and it makes you think a lot you need to learn a lot of things, because it’s not like yore home country. When your parents will take care of you, you need to take care of your self. So it is really a challenge for us and we learn a lot from these challenges and we get more mature.

Faisal: And what made you chose Saint Cloud State?

Kevin: I choose this school because of my friend. He was here and he recommended this school to me and this school has very low tuition and this school kind of beautiful and good quality school. So I acme to here

Faisal: Do you have any questions for me?

Kevin: No, it is just nice to meet you.

Faisal: nice to meet you too.

Challenges and benefits of interviewing an international student

interviewing an international student mean the interviewer has to consider who would be the interviewee and then might face a hard time to find the ways approaching a person due to differences in lifestyles. However, those challenges are a great way to achieve knowledge about different cultures.

language barrier is the most challenge in interviewing with an international student. Understanding the interviewee is very important. Also, knowing that the interviewee understand the questions that he was asked is the key to make them answer and talk.Some information may be difficult to understand and boring but we must have to handle any kind of situation.

When we talks about the benefits of interviewing an international students All over the world the coming in the united states, you have a little opportunity to go there known everything, but to interview an international student is a good chance to get detail information about other countries. During the interviewing, people can learn and know a lot of cultures about the country; also people can compare the difference and similarity cultures between their own countries. On other hand, people usually will use the English for interviewing, so that is helpful to our English skills. Interviewing bring us benefits of discovering other cultures as well as life styles and on the other hand reflect our own culture by looking at peoples ways of thinking

In conclusion, interviewing an international student make people face some challenges finding and approaching interviewees at first but obviously, the interviewing process would bring many benefits since interviewers will be able to achieve knowledge about another cultures as well as their own culture.

Objectives

My objectives are learning about another person’s culture, religion, region and way of life. By Interviewing with another people from different region I will learn how other people live their lives differently.

Page 15 Summary

Before traveling to Moscow one has to decide wither to travel in a group or individual.  Either way there are many agencies that will provide all the available experiences that you will get in Moscow. There are many ways to travel in a group to Moscow. There is the regular way of traveling which is sight-seeing package tour. Also, for individual traveler, there is a group that is joined from individual travelers that usually don’t know each other. These groups are fairly big containing between twenty five to forty people. These groups combine standard features “First class hotel accommodations, tree full meals daily with full board, transportation, sight-seeing excursions, entrance fees and tour guide”(1). The second form of group travel is group with special interest. These groups get interest related tour programs form wide variety of activity and trips. These tours also include Airline travel and hotels booking. I also found an expansion to this topic in the book Fodor’s Moscow. The book Fodor’s Moscow has more information on the group travel.  “The price of these group travel with special interest range wide, but usually higher than escorted tours and programs”(2). Both travel plans are available with great tourist experiences in Moscow. Most travel agents will provide you with all of these options and more. The travel agents can also provide guided tours and excursions. While searching in to expand the summarized topic I found the book Eyewitness Travel Guides Moscow share the same topic. In the book Eyewitness Travel Guides Moscow, that the Travel agencies operate most of bus tours in Moscow these bus tours are the most popular way of tours in the city. “The Intourist agency offers a wide range of tours, mainly to the most well-known sights. Patriarshiy Dom Tours offers a range of tours in English”(3).

Little Princess: Chapter Analysis

Little Princes: One Man's Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal is a story written by Conor Grennan regarding child trafficking. This analysis paper aims to discuss the part five of the book which is entitled as Liz. This will allow the reader to understand the concept of part five ‘Liz’ in context of the book provided by the author.

As a matter of fact, Liz was Grennan’s friend at the time when he was involved in saving the lives of children who were abducted from their homes and sold to people involved in human trafficking. The chapter discusses that Liz has been very supportive to Grennan. She was a social worker and loved to help people in need. The author noted that Liz fell in love with those children and felt that it was her own children. Although she knew that Grennan was going to risk his life, Liz never stopped him.

 Furthermore, Grennan realized that he likes Liz and that she would make a perfect match for him. He was nervous to approach her at first. However, later in the chapter he did what his heart told him to. He proposed Liz and they were together thereafter. Liz wasn't just an email pal to Grennan. She was more than that. She was his inspiration. Though not present physically, Liz was always with him through her emails. Her presence in Grennan's life whether it be through emails or in person always encouraged him. In fact, the chapter pertains to inform the readers that Liz ultimately became a motivation force to Grennan.

 The meaning that comes forth from the part five of the book is that Liz was able to picture herself in the position of those children and she believed that there was nothing more imperative than saving those children. The chapter also gives an indication that Liz wanted to acknowledged the achievement of Grennan in her work so as to spread the information regarding children and especially little girls being abducted  all over the world.

Little Princes

          Description: Liz

This part of the novel talked about Liz coming to Nepal, Grennan telling his story of Humla to the children of Dhaulagiri. This part also mentioned finding Bishnu, the last one of the seven children for whom Grennan came back to Nepal.

In this part, Liz, Grennan’s email friend who by now was more than just a friend came to Nepal.  This was when Grennan just returned from about a month long journey from Humla.  Grennan was excited to tell his story to everyone and at the same time fascinated by hearing Liz’s voice instead of reading her email. Back in “next generation Nepal” he learned that now have twenty six children. However, the rescue of the children living in Dhaulagiri had not gone as planned. They were not able do anything about the child trafficker. The situation got worse when the traffickers made it seem as if the author and his friends were trying to steal children.

Two days later, Liz met with the children. The children especially girls seem to like her at once.  Then came the time when Grennan showed the pictures of their parents to the children. Each and every child looked happy to see their parents’ picture and to know that they still care about them except two orphans Raju and Priya. Grennan couldn’t have told them anything more than the harsh reality of their life that their parents were not alive. The day Liz left; Connor had a hard time asking Liz to come back. However, He gathered all his courage and told her that the children would be more than happy to see her again. Liz on her side replied that she would love to meet them again too.

Almost a week since they had spoken, Liz came back to Nepal and spent time with Grennan and the children for about seven days. They were happy and enjoyed being together. Two weeks after Liz left, Grennan went to the English language bookstore in Thamel and bought a bible just to get to know Liz better.

 

            On January 30, he got a call from Jacky who tells him that Gyan has located ‘Bishnu’ the last one of the seven children. But the problem was Bishnu was sold as a domestic slave to a wealthy businessman of Nepal. It was a difficult situation. The person was not willing to hand Bishnu to them. The person pushed Grennans hand aside and grabbed the doorknob when Grennan refuse to give Bishnu back. Jacky then quickly called the mayor. When the Mayor shouted at the bank manager, the bank walked out with all the anger in his head.  Later, Grennan realized that the only person who believed that finding Bishnu was possible was Liz.

Liz and Grennan continued writing many times every day. They were writing about their days and what did they do on that day. Even more, not only Grennan was interested in Liz’s life there were also two girls from Dhaulagiri where he was in that time. The two girls were thinking that Grennan and Liz were more than friends even when he told them that they were just friends. As a result, Grennan told Liz to e-mail the girls and say that we are just friend so that they believe him. Grennan hinted in his e-mails that he would like her to come and visit him. After a month Liz said that she will come to visit him. Grennan was excited when he got the news and told everyone. Liz stayed with him for a short and fun seven days. After that visit Grennan started to love her and misses her, also Liz had the same feeling and she told him many times how she wanted to be with Grennan. Eventually, Grennan proposed her and they are together since then.

This part of the novel gave light on Liz meeting Grennan, Grennan reuniting the children with their parents, Grennan finding the seveth child and Grennan proposing Liz. In conclusion, this was pretty happy ending.

 

I have problems with particular parts of a paper -- introductions, thesis statements, conclusions.

How to write introduction, thesis statement and conclusion.

Introduction:

An essay’s introduction is usually a single paragraph that introduces the reader to the essay’s subject matter. Also an introduction it must be the “first paragraph (or paragraphs) of any written work” (Leo). A good introduction has many features.  The first of these is the "hook" which draws the reader into the paper.

 

The introduction does the following:

·         Grapes the reader’s attention

·         Introduces the reader to the essay’s topic

·         State the essay’s thesis

 

 What goes on in an introduction?

·         Hook sentences

·         Supporting sentences

·         Thesis statement

 

 

 

What is the Thesis Statement?

 

The thesis statement is a sentence (or sentences) that state the main idea or argument in the essay. Also the thesis statement is not the title and it must be a complete sentence that explains in some detail what you expect to write about. However, the thesis statement provides the point to prove, presents the argument your essay in a concise form and gives the structure the essay will follow.

 

 

Types of thesis statement: there are two types of thesis statements.

·         An Open Thesis does not contain the body points.

Example, everyone should drive a hybrid car

·         A Closed Thesis includes the points.

Example, everyone should drive a hybrid car because they pollute less, they get better mileage, and they help reduce gasoline costs.

 

 What is the Conclusion?

As we learned the conclusion is the last paragraph in the essay that includes the main point and summarizing the whole body paragraphs. Also, it could state the opinions, suggestions or wishes of the writer. According to Uni learning website “the conclusion is the function of the essay’s conclusion is to restate the main argument”.

review of the book Little Princes

 

      Little Princes is a book about thirty-year-old man named Conor Gernnan how needed a change in his life. It started when he was bored from his job and needed to break the daily Routine of his life. Conor decided to take an adventure and volunteering in an orphanage in one of the poorest country in the world for one year. He decided to spend all of his savings to do this adventure. Conor started his journey in Nepal in an orphanage called little princes he stated there for three months. Conor developed a since of relationship with the orphans in Little Princes. Conor traveled over sixteen countries before he returned home after one year of adventure.  After that Conor was missing Nepal so he decided to go back to Nepal for another three months to end hes travel after he promised the orphans that he will come back. After the three months Conor went back to his home, several months later the civil war in Nepal got worse and seven of the children were lost. This novel opened my eyes to a window that I never looked from. Volunteering in one of the poorest country in the world is one of the noble things that anyone can do. Conor Gernnan is an inspiring person that did a thing that not many people do. My first imprtion was that conor going to be the hero in his novel; however, he convinced my otherwise Conor was a man how cared about the children that nobody cared about. I enjoyed reading this inspiring and motivational novel. When Conor returned the third time to Nepal to find the lost orphans and the civil war was going on that was a brave thing that even most of the volunteers don’t do. Trafficking Children is one of the common crimes that happens in poor countries. Moreover, I liked how Conor founded Next Generation Nepal organization that helps trafficked children. It showed how he was really determent on helping the trafficked children. I also looked up Next Generation Nepal website and read how they helped the children in Nepal. And I didn’t know that a portion of this book would go to Next Generation Nepal organization. I would definitely recommend this book to others as I enjoyed reading it. I also looked at the pictures of Conor adventures in the book and in the website of Next Generation Nepal and it gave me a since of what Conor went through.

Conor Grennan was board of his life and he needed a change. He needed something to get him out of the work Routine. Conor decided to go to trip around the world for a year. He had some savings from an eight years job. Also, to get himself from criticism on spending his entire savings on a vacation, he decided to volunteer in an orphanage. One thing that surprised Conor is his friends reaction to his decision. They weren’t supportive to his decision as he thought they would. However, Conor was determent in his adventure. When Conor Grennan first arrived Nepal for his trip to a round the world he described his first reaction to Nepal.

When Conor was going to leave Nepal and the orphanage he didn’t think it would be hard. Unlike what Conor thought it was hard on him to say good-bye. After spending long time with the kids he developed a father son relation ship with the orphans. However, he had to say good-bye to the kids. When he was confronting the orphans about him leaving. He wasn’t planning to comeback to the orphanage again Conor thought volunteering in an orphanage is one in alive time. Also, little princes staff advised him not to till the orphans that he will be back. However, Conor promised them that he will be back.

who I am

Hello,

            My name is Faisal Alsultan I am from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I was born in Washington DC 22 years ago. When I was two years old my family went back to Saudi Arabia. I have a family of two parents and three brothers and two little sisters.  I came from a military officers family my father was in the Saudi army and one of my brothers is in the Saudi national guards and two in the Saudi navy. So, I am the only member of my family how is not in the military.

            I enjoy most kinds of sports. I was in one of the major soccer teams in Riyadh. I was until middle school after that I quite the team and focused on my studies in high school. Now I play soccer and go to the gym every now and then. I also look forward to the upcoming football season.

            I graduated from high school three years ago after that I decided to complete my education in The United States. I studied the English language for nine months in Chicago. After I completed my English proficiency I applied to St Cloud State. This is my second year in SCSU. I’m majoring in Business and hopefully I will graduate in two more years. So far I like Minnesota with it’s cold winters.

            After I graduate from SCSU I plan to complete my study and get a master in MBA. So I can help my father in his business.

I am very much looking forward to this class.
